The Cherry Boudreaux Memorial Garden was officially dedicated on Saturday, May 21st. The garden is located behind the Historic Zachary Depot on Main Street. The Cherry Boudreaux Memorial Garden is a private funded project dedicated in memory of Cherry Boudreaux, who served as a founding member of the City of Zachary Beautification Committee. Long-time Zachary resident, Cherry Boudreaux died tragically in an automobile accident in 2014. “Her love for gardening and her beautification efforts will continue through this memorial garden for years to come,” says the Boudreaux family. The memorial plaza is intended to serve as a reflection garden in her memory, and will also become the trail-head for the proposed future half-mile walking path.
The highlight of the garden is a 15th Century Armillary Sphere, donated by Dr. and Mrs. Brent Boudreaux. The timepiece was designed by The French Casting Company in New Orleans. Armillary spheres were often found in formal medicinal gardens of monks long ago. The armillary spheres added grace and beauty in the landscape, and also served as teaching tools for the study of astronomy. They were entertaining during outside events in gardens, and functioned as a clock also. “We are thrilled to have this timeless garden ornament in our Zachary Historical District, and feel it will become a teaching tool to the many students who tour our grounds each year, as well as visitors,” says Jean Byers, Zachary Historical District Director. “Our mom, Cherry Boudreaux, was also a devoted educator for 36 years, and we feel this armillary sundial will serve as a wonderful learning experience and a reminder of our rich history,” says the Boudreaux family.
